About Fitzalan High School
Fitzalan High School is a large urban school in Cardiff employing 135 teachers and 45 teaching assistants and catering to the needs of 1650 pupils. The student body is multi-ethnic and 81% are classed as EAL (English as an Additional Language). Without effective literacy and reading support it will be difficult for students to achieve their best in content areas.
How Lianne got started with Tactical Teaching
In 2010 Lianne, with the support of Fitzalan High School, was part of a small but eager team of three Facilitators trained in Tactical Teaching Reading (TTR) by Cardiff Council. She trained teachers in quite a few Cardiff schools, including her own.

Michaelston Community College, part of a Federation with Glyn Derw High School, is situated on the outskirts of Cardiff and serves a catchment area in which there are particularly high levels of social and economic disadvantage. Most pupils live in the 20% most deprived areas of Wales. The proportion of pupils entitled to free school meals is 49.1%; the second highest amongst secondary schools in Wales and significantly higher than the national average of 17.4%. While the Federation caters for the full ability range, the largest proportion of pupils is of average and lower ability with literacy levels below the national levels.

Palm Beach-Currumbin State High School is a large Gold Coast school housing 2450 students and 170 staff, which ensure a dynamic and complex environment.
In 2011 Palm Beach-Currumbin State High School took up the challenge of improving literacy and numeracy. Whole school change would not come either quickly or haphazardly, especially in such a large school. This is their Reading Journey.
